Considering smoking cessation during pregnancy, we found that compared with women who kept smoking before and throughout pregnancy, maternal smokers who quitted smoking in the first, second, or third trimester did not have a significantly reduced risk of overall congenital anomalies, with adjusted RRs (95% CI) of 0.99(0.911.08), 1.06(0.951.19), and 0.93 (0.781.10), respectively (Additional file 1: Table S1)
